When the current owners of this five-story (plus roof terrace) townhouse at 462 West 23rd Street moved in, they turned to friend and interiors expert Amy Kolker of Jane Street Projects to transform the white-box building into a lush urban mansion ready for working, living, and entertaining on a grand scale. The result: A maximalist’s dream of layered rugs, plush furniture, dreamy landscaped terraces, and statement marble on unexpected surfaces. Asking $19,950,000, the Chelsea townhouse was featured in Architectural Digest, introducing the world to its dark, dramatic style.

The townhouse’s current owner is James Haslam, a filmmaker whose parents co-own the Cleveland Browns and the Milwaukee Bucks, according to Mansion Global.

The home’s lower two floors are dedicated to entertaining and professional options. Through an entrance gallery that introduces one of its many visual themes–terra cotta tiles sealed in glossy black epoxy–a massive, light-filled gathering space is topped by 20-foot ceilings.

At the back, a wall of glass introduces the verdant private bamboo garden. An elegantly restored elevator cab awaits to access the floors above.

On the parlor floor are a home office and a library, framed by high ceilings, tall windows, and a wood-burning fireplace. Through the office, there is a lofted dining room open to the dramatic double-height living space below.

On the third floor, an equally dramatic kitchen offers just about every feature a maximalist would crave, including custom brass sinks and top appliances framed by glossy emerald green fluted glass-core tiles. A catering kitchen is tucked into the home’s basement for backup.

On the other side of this floor is a sun-filled lounge warmed by a dramatic wood-burning fireplace. Massive glass doors open onto a landscaped south-facing balcony shaded by an awning.

On the upper floors are the home’s main bedrooms; the primary suite occupies the entire fifth floor. This impossibly dramatic chamber is served by a marble-clad bathroom with heated black limestone floors and a skylit walk-in shower, a dressing room, and a wood-burning fireplace.

Adding even more magical city hideaway space, the top floor of the townhouse features dual landscaped roof terraces with panoramic views. Between them is a window-wrapped sunroom lounge with a wet bar.

Behind the scenes, 21st-century comforts have been added as well. New additions include a Daikin zoned HVAC system, surround sound, Lutron-controlled lighting, a water filtration system, an updated boiler, and a water pump to optimize water pressure.
